It was suggested that Karan Johar be dubbed the “Atlee of Hindi cinema”, with Atlee being asked for his opinion.

Atlee started his film career with a Hindi film Jawan. On Thursday, the director discussed the screening of the film, which stars Shah Rukh Khan, at the India Today Conclave Mumbai 2023. Atlee also discussed his first meeting with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan (SRK) in 2013, when the actor was introduced as “the Karan Johar of South India”. Atlee responded to the question whether Karan Johar should be known as the “Atlee of Hindi cinema” or not, saying that unlike Karan, he does action films.

Recently, in a meeting, Atlee was asked about Karan Johar.

“This photo was taken in 2013,” Atlee said, “when they first met at an awards ceremony.” In the South, I was honored as the best director of the year for the first time. Shahrukh Khan was seen as a part of ‘Chennai Express’ promotional tour. I requested a photo session with them and their management agreed to it. At that time, he had no idea who I was. A mutual friend had dubbed me “the Karan Johar of South India”. This made him happy and he hugged me.

When asked about his comparison with Karan Johar, the filmmaker replied, “I started with South cinema. That’s why people nicknamed me ‘South Indian Karan Johar’. Yes, Karan sir, I do action films and admire you. He was the driving force in getting me to act in the Hindi film Jawan. But don’t put it like that.

On this occasion Atlee discussed the North versus South film controversy. The director said that films cannot be classified. He added that “that respect has to be there in the production process as well” because, in a movie theater, no one knows who is sitting next to them, what they are, or where they are from.

Jaavaan was released on 7 September in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, directed by Atlee and produced by Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment. Apart from Shah Rukh, the film stars Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Girija Oak, Sanjita Bhattacharya is included. Lahar Khan, Alia Qureshi, Riddhi Dogra, Sunil Grover, and many others in supporting roles.
During a recent India Today event, Atlee spoke about Shah Rukh’s inspiration for the pan-Indian scope of Jawan, noting that the actor “felt it should be a national film and a national collaboration of culture. ” Furthermore, he praised the crowd for being intelligent enough to “know what is good and what is bad.” Atlee said that “certain classifications should be abolished” and that all people involved in the film industry should be referred to simply as “Indian filmmakers” and “national filmmakers”.
