Euro 2024: France beat Portugal on penalties in semi-final |

France kept their cool and converted all their shots in the shootout to beat Portugal 5-3 on penalties after the two teams played out a goalless draw in their European Championship quarter-final on Friday.

Theo Hernandez struck the winner in perfect order after Joao Felix’s third shot for Portugal hit the post. France now face Spain in the semi-finals on Tuesday in Munich.

Portugal’s defeat likely spells the end of a 21-year international career for 39-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, who converted his first penalty in the shootout but was also responsible for one of the evening’s many glaring misses.

France’s success will make up for the disappointment of the penalty shootout at the last European Championship, where they were eliminated by Switzerland in the round of 16, and also in the 2022 World Cup final against Argentina.

Ousmane Dembele, Youssouf Fofana, Jules Kounde and Bradley Barcola scored penalties for victorious France.

The game, which was a slow-burner, ended with many missed opportunities from both sides, with both teams having clear chances throughout the 90 minutes and into the half-hour of extra time.

France now find themselves in the semi-finals without scoring a single goal in open play at the tournament, having scored two own goals and converted a penalty in their previous four games.

However, the French have also kept a clean sheet in open play at Euro 2024, with goalkeeper Mike Maignan making two key saves in Friday’s match that proved decisive for his side.
