History BC. Dating back to the 5th century, the Grand Canal in China is the oldest canal in the world. Started by King Fuchai of Wu for trading purposes, it is still operating today despite major renovations during the Spring and Autumn Period, Sui Dynasty, and Yuan Dynasty.
